Aldertide was a holiday that marked the beginning of the Alder month in the squirrel calendar. In ancient times, great celebrations were held in the five royal houses of black squirrels, but they ceased after the Hazel Realm was destroyed by the bat armies on that day.

An outdoor faire would be held, with merchants selling wares from stalls and performers enthralling audiences with their acts. The royal family of each realm would make a special appearance to announce the important ritual that would awaken the trees for spring. Maidens who had come of age would take up alder wands and dance in a line down an avenue of trees. They would stop at each one and beat on its trunk with their wands, shouting "Awake, awake! Thy sleep is ended!"
